We have – once again – assembled a varied and exciting programme of music which includes not only some of the most distinctive music of recent years but also many pieces which are receiving their first performances in our concerts, given by outstanding professional performers of new music.
Aspects of Eno
We pay tribute to the musical polymath Brian Eno in two concerts, which explore his extensive contribution, as composer, producer and inventor, in addition to some of his own music – including his Harold Budd collaboration The Plateaux of Mirror – the concerts include music by other significant composers which was featured on or inspired by his Obscure record label.
We pay tribute in our concerts to two important British composers celebrating important birthdays in 2019: Roger Marsh will celebrate his 70th birthday in December and Judith Weir her 65th in May, and both feature in our programmes. In addition we pay tribute to distinguished composer, conductor and teacher Oliver Knussen who died in 2018.
In 2012 Late Music presented a day of song which resulted in several new song cycles for baritone and piano, and which led to the production of the CD recording ‘Songs Now’ which attracted significant critical attention. So we felt that another song day was long overdue, and in April we feature two song recitals which will include new collaborations between York-based poets and composers.
Women in Music
In 2016 Late Music became one of the first musical organisations to commit to a programme which featured male and female composers and performers in equal number, recognising that ‘women hold up half the sky’. Other promoters now follow, which is gratifying. In 2019 we collaborate with Illuminate, a touring concert series which promotes female composers exclusively, and they will present the Prism Trio (from Boston, US) at Late Music in September.
Last year proved to be our most successful year to date, and we are hoping that our programme for 2019 will prove even more attractive; we continue to offer high quality, musically adventurous concerts in an informal environment – and a complimentary glass of wine at our pre-concert talks!
We look forward to meeting you in the year ahead.
