Ian Ryan

Ian RyanIan studied Economics at Selwyn College, Cambridge, and as a repetiteur at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the National Opera Studio, London. In 2005-6 he was the recipient of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama/Scottish Opera Repetiteur Fellowship Award funded by the Musicians' Benevolent Fund, and from 2007-2010, he was a full-time member of the music staff of Scottish Opera.

For Scottish Opera, Ian has worked on productions of La Bohème, Don Giovanni, Carmen, Der Rosenkavalier, Falstaff, The Two Widows (Smetana), La Traviata, I Puritani, Manon, Intermezzo and Scottish Opera’s new opera project, Five:15 Operas Made in Scotland. For Scottish Opera Go Round, he has received critical acclaim as the pianist and musical director for productions of Rossini's Cinderella, The Merry Widow and Katya Kabanova.

Ian has worked for the Royal Opera (Thaïs) and the Edinburgh International Festival for concert performances of El Niño (John Adams) and La Donna del Lago (Rossini). He has also joined the music staff of Opera North for productions of Carmen, The Portrait (Weinberg) and The Queen of Spades. Future plans include new productions of The Death of Klinghoffer (John Adams) for English National Opera and Idomeneo for Grange Park Opera. He has accompanied Paul Carey Jones for performances at the York Late Music Festival and the Grimsby St Hugh’s Festival, and looks forward to the release of their recording of 21st Century British Song in 2012.
